5 Ways to Prepare the Home for an In-Home Caregiver

Most people, especially older adults prefer the comfort and privacy of their own home. Since they prefer doing familiar everyday routine, many older adults opt to age in place instead of going to a nursing home. For them, if they need assistance in daily living, they can just seek caregiving services in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

If you have an older adult who prefers living in the comfort of their own home, then hiring a caregiver is a must. What this entails for you though is that you have to prepare the home for the arrival of the carer from the healthcare staffing agency in Oklahoma. There are a few things you can do in preparation for the arrival of the senior’s caregiver.

  1. Talk to Your Loved One
Communicate with the senior adult that you will be hiring a caregiver to assist them with their daily routine. Some older adults may be resistant to this as they may feel that someone is invading their privacy or limiting their freedom. Make them understand that hiring the said professional is for their own benefit.
  2. Prepare the Older Adult’s Medical Information
You will have to share a couple of medical information to the caregiver to help them prepare for any situation. These medical details include, but not limited to, doctor’s appointment, phone numbers of healthcare professionals, medication schedule, dietary requirements, and allergies.
  3. Safe-Keep Personal Items
Most professional caregivers are trustworthy and honest. However, just to avoid future legal problems, it is highly recommended that you safe-keep personal items before the arrival of the caregiver. Sensitive personal items and documents can be secured in locked file cabinets or safety deposit box.
  4. Caregiver’s Day Off
Decide ahead of time what the arrangement will be when the caregiver takes their allocated day off. Someone needs to fill in while the caregiver is away. Someone from the family can fill in for a day but you can also consider seeking respite care services.
  5. Prepare a Spare Bedroom
If the caregiver is going to live in the house together with the senior adult, prepare a private room for the caregiver’s use. Both the caregiver and the senior adult will want to have time for themselves. Having the two together in one room, for whatever reason you may have, is not recommended.
